Billing and coding programs will need to assure access to:
- A computer with Internet access and printer
- Three coding manuals:
a) CD-9-CM (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification)
b) CPT-4 (Current Procedural Terminology, 4th Edition)
c) HCPCS Level II (HCFA Common Procedural Coding System)
- One of several physician fee schedules such as Medical Fees in the United States 2000 (Los Angeles: Practice Management Information Corporation, 2000). These are listings of medical procedure codes, descriptions, usual customary and reasonable (UCR) charges, Medicare fees and Medicare relative value units. The UCR charges listed in the publication are derived from an analysis of over 400 million actual charges.
- A medical library (preferably with holdings in the field of managed care) to permit further readings
Additional practice cases may also be gathered from the facultys own practice as well as from the collaborating training sites. Supporting documentation such as office and hospital notes, diagnostic test results, and/or surgical procedure reports will confer a realistic impression to the cases.
